NEHAP Malaysia's Thematic Working Group 2 [TWG2] are focused on ensuring safe and sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services to prevent endemic and outbreak waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid.
A major priority is addressing contamination of drinking water sources by not only conventional pollutants but also emerging threats, including pharmaceutical residues, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), and microplastics, which require updated treatment technologies and monitoring protocols.
The group emphasizes mitigating the health impacts of climate change (e.g., increased flood-related disease outbreaks) and reducing the public health threat posed by inadequate sanitation infrastructure, particularly pollution from small-scale sewage systems, all aimed at achieving the objectives of Sustainable Development Goal 6 [SDG6].
